Why skipping your daily brushing routine can be detrimental to your medical health generally

Brushing your teeth twice a day is something you shouldn't take lightly. It goes beyond keeping your teeth white. There are health benefits like having strong gums, healthy enamel, and a full set of gnashers before you leave this world.

According to dentists Dr Ken Harris, Dr Sameer Patel and Dr Adam Thorne, it is an important part of your health and wellbeing. Poor oral hygiene can increase your chances of heart disease as oral infections can travel to other parts of your body. In a job interview, candidates with bright smiles have more chance of landing the job than fellows with dental issues.

Neglecting your dental health, even brushing your teeth twice a day, could lead to gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. The latter could lead to premature tooth loss, with a need for implants or dentures. Not least bad breath, another turn-off on date nights as well as job interviews.

To prevent tooth decay, Drs Ken Harris, Sameer Patel and Adam Thorne recommend the following tips:

  • Brush twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste. Do not brush too hard as that can damage the enamel of your teeth;
  • Hold the head of your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle. This allows you to cover the gum line;
  • Replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every three months.
