As a leading cosmetic dentistry practice, we understand how there’s more to good looking smiles than the aesthetic side of things. Good oral health is even more important: it is about eating and drinking healthily as well as mental health. Smoking, drinking alcohol to excess, and a poor diet are among a few triggers of Mouth Cancer.
Mouth Cancer affects one in seven people, which is higher than that of road traffic accidents. 70% of cases are male. With 6,767, cases reported per annum, this is higher than that of cervical and testicular cancers. Since 2006, cases have risen by a third. It affects the sufferer’s ability to eat, drink, speak, or breathe.
To raise awareness, the British Dental Health Foundation (together with Denplan, Dentists’ Provident, and the Association of Dental Groups) are behind Mouth Cancer Action Month. Starting on the 01 November, its aim is to make sure that we are all Mouthaware.
“If in doubt, get checked out”
This year’s phrase, “if in doubt, get checked out”, focuses on the three signs and symptoms of mouth cancer that shouldn’t be ignored. The three signs are:
- Ulcers which do not heal in three weeks;
- Red and white patches in the mouth;
- Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area.
Their website also has a handy, easy to follow infographic, that is worth sharing.
The Blue Lip Selfie Campaign
The fun side to Mouth Cancer Action Month is the Blue Lip Selfie Campaign. Backed by Denplan, people can show their support for this month by taking pictures of themselves with blue lips. In November, you will be able to buy some plastic blue lips or blue lipstick. Plus you can share your selfie on Facebook or Instagram by using the hashtag #BlueLipSelfie.
